The New Virginity

The New Virginity is a movement determined by purity rings and virginity pledges and abstinence before marriage. Abstinence-only programs at schools urge students to wait until they are married to have sex and give pledges to their parents. Some students wear purity rings to express their choice to stay pure.

>The first virginity pledge program was started in 1993 at the Southern Baptist Convention; it was called True Love Waits and now boasts over 2.5 million pledgers worldwide in dozens of countries. A torrent of virginity pledge programs followed. > >Some virginity pledge programs use religion to motivate young people, putting Biblical quotes in their brochures. Others use statistics and current events. Advocates for virginity pledges often couple with support for abstinence-only sex education in public schools. They argue that any other type of sexual education would promote sex outside of marriage, which they believe to be immoral and risky. > >  > >True Love Waits 1993 pledge: > >"Believing that true love waits, I make a commitment to God, myself, my family, those I date, and my future mate to be sexually pure until the day I enter marriage." > >  > >True Love Waits more recent pledge reads: > >"Believing that true love waits, I make a commitment to God, myself, my family, my friends, my future mate, and my future children to a lifetime of purity including sexual abstinence from this day until the day I enter a biblical marriage relationship." > >  > >True Love Waits pledge (2009) "I am making a commitment to myself, my family, and my Creator, that I will abstain from sexual activity of any kind before marriage. I will keep my body and my thoughts pure as I trust in God's perfect plan for my life." (quote on card) "It is God's will that you should be sanctified: that you should avoid sexual immorality; that each of you should learn to control his/her own body in a way that is holy and honorable." 1 Thess 4:3-4 > >Virginity pledges and purity rings became even more popular with the emergence of such pop-stars as The Jonas Brothers and Miley Cyrus, who gave virginity pledges and wore purity rings to express their beliefs and urge young people to abstain from sex. With the influence of popular culture on society, many young people followed and accepted the message, and their parents were glad to see these stars as role models for their children. > >  > >Numerous studies were conducted in order to measure the effectiveness of virginity pledges, some show that girls who made virginity pledges were less likely to become pregnant and engage in sexual activity. Others tell us that virginity pledges do not work and pledgers as well as non-pledgers are similarly likely to engage in sexual activity before marriage, but pledgers are less likely to use contraceptive methods such as the Pill and condoms. Thus it is hard to indicate the exact numbers of those pledgers and non-pledgers who engage in sexual activity and of those who use contraceptives. > >  > >In any case a pledge is something that is psychologically hard to break, most likely due to guilt. However, a teen should be deliberate and educated about any of his/her decisions as well as strongly motivated about their choice to have /not have sexual relationships. They have to be well informed of the true risks of STDs and unintended pregnancy, contraceptive failure rates, and why should they abstain. > >  > >A recent poll from the National Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy found that 55% of sexually active boys and 72% of sexually active girls wish they had waited longer to have sex.   It night be better to wait because the younger you are the more you are influenced by emotions, the less you are experienced in communicating with people, thus the less you understand their motivations and deeds. It may seem to you that adults are trying to overprotect you just because, but look at this another way: you are young and you are in doubt whether or not your boyfriend or girlfriend is in love with you the same way that you are in love with him/her. And it seems to you that sex is what will make him/her happy even though you are not sure if its the right time, but you do not do it for yourself. In the end, early relationships usually fall apart, partly because young people want to experience diversity and a lack of responsibilities while they still can enjoy it. Usually, young people are not ready for long-lasting relationships. As a result, most sexually active boys and girls wish they had waited longer before having sex. > >Alcohol and drugs may also affect you choices, so it is strongly recommended not to mix alcohol and drug use with sex, because these substances dull the perception of right and wrong, as well as concentration, which may adversely affect the use of contraception (condom tear, slippage). > >  > >Talk to your friends and parents and find out what they think about the virginity pledge or a purity ring,   educate yourself as much as you can, and decide what is best for you. >
